If the reticle is positioned on the sky, the internal code does not have a water reference on which to apply a delta and simply uses the default (ergo, true longitudinal range). I'm guessing that the internal code starts with a true longitudinal lock on a target and then a delta is added based on where a user places their reticle on the water around the ship. This occurs all the time on a locked target, and the longitudinal error is also compressed (relative to the map). The range delta around the locked target is compressed. One based on the big map and another based on the locked target. Note that the game has two internal range mappings. Sounds like a bug in the auto-ranging code. I can see WG justifying the terrain block auto ranging (as even there, you still gotta pay attention to the minimap and adjust appropriately).but I can't see how they can justify sky aiming auto ranging. That said, the sky aiming technique.that' s a new one for me. I believe this is "as designed" and will remain. Been doing this for many years and have posted several times on it in these forums. I use "aim assist" all the time shooting over terrain as locked targets over terrain are automatically ranged for you.
